just some quick little thoughts on the origin of this text (this is not just an ad for a video essay of mine i swear)

a few weeks ago i was working on my first “proper” video essay, on the GTA series and queer (non-)representation, and part of this research was amanda phillips’ gamer trouble (2020), and in it there is yet another passage on the ludology-narratology-thing, nothing special, just mentioning it as a historic thing, but it still got me KICKING AND SCREAMING AND EVERYTHING, and so i rushed into a new text document on my computer & typed this lil text. yeah.

here is a screenshot from my video, tc: 00:13:49, illustrating exactly my reaction to anything ludology-narratology-debate-mentioning:

(just normal gyrl stuff.)

so, maybe that’s uhm interesting. my video essay currently sits at exactly 0 views. [*sad gyrl noises intensify*] (well, that’s the great thing about the avant-garde, that we are THERE – somewhere, nobody knows where!!! – before everyone else.)

go watch it if you like to :3 (it is age-restricted, 18+ tho.)

a couple of days ago i randomly blessed by “the algorithm” watched a quite cool video essay by cyril focht, called Let's forget about “ludology vs narratology”, summarizing this debate/non-debate in a comprehensive form. (also phillips’ gamer trouble mentioned there lol.) go watch that one too, i can recommend it, even though i came across that one after publishing my text.

(but also: focht just casually drinking alcohol, i don’t like it when video essayists do that, subtly normalizing the consumption of alcohol even as “just a joke” – like idk, lindsay ellis, contrapoints, cj the x, they just make drinking in video essays look “cool”, and i’ve always been strongly against that. normalize NOT drinking. normalize water. (stAy hYdRaTeD.))

(achtung, jetzt kommt ein julia klöckner weinkönigin 1995/96 jumpscare!)

(das war der julia klöckner weinkönigin 1995/96 jumpscare.)

that’s all i wanted to share for now.

okay. bye.
